about

Philadelphia’s James Falconi returns to NOREMIXES as Atmosphreq with a sophomore release that builds upon the sonic palette of his 2015 self-titled debut. However, Northwest mise en Scéne feels less like a follow up to Atmosphreq’s NOREMIXES debut, but rather more of a accompaniment - the needed bookend to contain the composer’s strident soundscapes. Prominent guitar gestures swirl amongst expertly crafted distorted drones, leaving a more colorful and delicate hue on Northwest mise en Scéne than it’s predecessor. Think Kevin Shields unburdened by the pop song format. Think John Cage at his most vicious. When swallowed whole, 'Northwest mise en Scéne' is broken up by only 3 moments of silence, with each pairing of tracks evolving into opaque textures, before cascading downward into the abyss of feedback.

The level of control in the mixes and the depth of the dynamics displayed throughout 'Northwest mise en Scéne' inspires, but unlike its predecessor, Atmosphreq finds the pulse within each jarring movement of Northwest mise en Scéne - injecting a wisp of humanity into its core. From open to close, you feel Falconi walking the razor’s edge between bliss and terror, alternately dark and slow and joyously effervescent, each piece showcasing Falconi’s use of phase shifts and disorienting rhythm tricks to create an underlying sense of unease mixed with awe. Northwest mise en Scéne bypasses areas of the listener’s brain commonly triggered by sound, and plunges into unexpected realms - where memory, tactile sensation, and emotions lie. This is an album you will feel more than one you understand.

And with 'Northwest mise en Scéne', Falconi fervently unveils just what Atmosphreq stands for: sonic perfectionism, outsized ambition, excess. But the quality Falconi embodies above all is patience. You have to come to Atmosphreq and experience his music on his terms. But the demands he makes don't preclude generosity. In fact, he rewards your commitment many times over. And the day will come when you will hear “Beneath the Waves” conclude and come to realize that Northwest mise en Scéne is a gift.
