about

The third release from NOREMIXES comes from Daniel Potter who
studied composition at Trinity College of Music and Goldsmiths,
University of London. ‘Modern Times/Trident’ is Potter’s first release under his given name, but he is no stranger to the music world having released under the moniker Warsnare on labels including Seclusiasis and Shades.

‘Modern Times’ the first piece on this release was composed “as an expression of the repetition and monotony of much of modern life,” says Potter. “Be it the work place, factory, mindless TV adverts or goods that we are sold which are just replaced a few months later.” Much of the rhythmic and melodic material is derived from everyday life: melodies were created from the shapes of transit maps and rhythms resemble motorway traffic. This studio recording features the Elysian String Quartet alongside live processing from MIDI triggers performed by David Holmes and Daniel Potter himself on laptop. The vibrato and rhythmic throbbing of both the acoustic and processed strings highlights the composer’s vision of a world that churns out disposable materials, but never resorts to minimalist techniques: always evolving, and pausing from any sense of monotony, discovering the next technology to replace.

The second piece on the release, ‘Trident’, was inspired by demonstrations Potter attended opposing the renewal of the UK’s nuclear weapons system of the same name. ‘Trident’ opens with explosive, sub heavy spiraling flourishes of dissonance illustrating the destructive force of the weaponry. The piece, composed for solo Flute, Oboe and Clarinet along with electronic processing, was performed by Jak Berry (flute), Natalie Grant (oboe) and Naomi Thomas (clarinet) with Potter once again behind the computer. A highlight of ‘Trident’ is its use of bit crushed processing against the acoustic woodwind which evokes the hum and drone of a crowd in the distance. Another strong compositional element comes in the form of an upward moving line that moves throughout the ensemble always constructing unfamiliar dissonances on every sustained note as though individual phrases are being picked out of the crowd. Then after a brief silence the piece shifts to a calmer, almost meditative state in which the electronics take a more prominent role with cascading firework-like pops in the distance.
