Atmosphreq is the moniker of Philadelphia-based composer James Falconi. Though his interest in music began with performance, playing and recording with various bands for nearly 10 years, his strength and main interest became composition. After a period of creating contemporary classical music for concert presentation, his main focus has become electro-acoustic music (incorporating influences from multiple genres) that is not intended for the concert hall, but various outlets including audio recordings, video, and installations. This self-titled release is his first as Atmosphreq.

Although music is what NOREMIXES does, and at its heart ‘Atmosphreq’ is a music release… James conceived the release as a multimedia project with original photography. Each track on the release is accompanied by a photograph that comments or relates to the music. NOREMIXES is pleased to offer a limited edition physical release consisting of five photographs, hand-printed by the composer on high-quality gelatin silver paper. Considering the music on Atmosphreq’s self-titled offering, most would label it as ambient -- if it were to be forced into a genre. Electronic sounds masquerade as acoustic sounds and acoustic sounds are processed until they become ambiguously electronic and the line between them seems unimportant. The music has a clear sense of purpose; it almost pulls you into the photos that accompany each track, as well as your own imagination. At times, things hint at melody and elsewhere, as with “What Happens With the Ropes Unlashed”, scrapes and dissonance take on an eerie, and other-worldly bleakness. When the final splashes of sound in “After the Cylinder Opens” conclude, the listener is either calmed or frightened; see what happens with you.
