about

For his second release of 2015 on NOREMIXES, Daniel Potter continues with his politically charged compositional musings; this time using climate change and global warming as his impetus. In 1977, a Yale economist, William Nordhaus, published a paper entitled “Economic Growth and Climate: The Carbon Dioxide Problem” in which he proposed that a global temperature increase of more than 2 or 3°C would “take the climate outside of the ranges of observations which have been made over the last several hundred thousand years”. Many historians point to this paper as the first mention of the 2°C threshold. Many scientists believe that a 2-degree rise in temperature would bring about serious increase in wildfires, hurricanes, Artic melting, extinction of amphibious species as well as lower crop yields and decline of freshwater.

The cover artwork for Potter’s 2°C shows the NASA Goddard Institute’s graph of annual mean temperatures which have drastically increased since the 1960’s. Some parts of the world have already seen an increase of over 6°C in the past 1200 years, including parts of Greenland, Russia and the Arctic. 2°C uses the tension of global warming in its compositional direction, as well as the temperature graph for its dynamics. Daniel explained the compositional connection by stating “The piece is constructed using bursts or flurries of short notes separated by longer sustained tones. I plotted points on the graph in chronological order so the duration of each burst is dependant on the temperature on the graph. The intensity of the flourishes and their overall dynamics and dissonance was dictated by the vertical axis of the graph.”

The piece was written for 8 channel surround with the audience positioned center. For the live performance, it is intended that each of the 8 brass players (in this recording performed by Oliver Carey [trumpet] and John Kilshaw [trombone]) would be positioned between two speakers with the electronic elements in the piece achieved from processing only those same brass recordings.

Daniel Potter studied composition at Trinity College of Music and Goldsmiths, University of London. Potter is also one of the organizers of the fortnightly club night The Trailer TV which broadcasts live across the Internet and takes place literally in a semi-trailer.
